Your loved-one deserves more than a card! Rob Ryan finds the most romantic hotels for Valentine's weekend.
It's nearly that time when, like it or not, our thoughts must turn to romance, roses, chocolates and copious quantities of Veuve Clicquot. Sadly, Valentines Day is on a Thursday this year - never the most amorous night of the week - but some hotels are still pushing the boat out and laying on special packages. Others are simply maintaining that they are a romantic destination all year round.
If you can't get away on the night itself, most establishments with special deals are offering them for the weekends before and after. Here are eight of the best options for romance in the UK and Ireland.
1. The Bushmills Inn Where? Bushmills, Co Antrim, N. Ireland
The Romance Factor: Perfect for a winter retreat, this is an intriguing, cosy inn, with four peat fires and a bar still lit by gaslight. It's only a mile and a half from the Giant's Causeway, where the wide beaches and crashing Atlantic rollers make for exhilarating winter walks. And on your return? A glass of 25 year-old Bushmills Malt to warm the cockles.
Best Bed: Room 52, also known as the 1608 suite, is a large room with free-standing bath and four poster bed.
Food for Love: Food served all day in the Taste of Ulster restaurant; everything from soup and sandwiches, to the freshest of fish from the nearby villages.
